Welcome Parents and Guardians,
It is my honor to welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year at Nickle. To all our returning students and families, welcome back. To our new students and families welcome to the Nickle School community.
Start-up
Nickle School would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year as well as take the time to point out a few information items regarding September start up. School Office will be open on Monday, Aug. 26 at 8:00 a.m.
- The first day of school is Thursday, August 29, 2024. This will be a regular day starting at 8:15 am until 2:40 pm. Students will meet their homeroom teachers inside the school, Grade 6 Students in the main gym, Grade 7 students I the Aux Gym and Grade 8/9 students in their homeroom. Students will be advised of their homeroom, timetables and locks will be handed out as well.
- Please note that homeroom changes are not entertained at this time. The construction of the homerooms was carefully carried out by our staff and staff at our feeder schools in the spring to best support student learning.
- Complimentary courses for students were determined based on what was available by the teaching staff and how the course fit in the timetable for the entire school. Students may not have been enrolled in all the complimentary courses they hoped for but will likely have the majority of their requests filled. At Nickle, students may have up to 8 different complimentary (only 7 courses if students take Band as this is a full year course) courses throughout the year exposing them to a variety of course before high school. At most Jr. highs students only receive 4 courses throughout the year.
- As we do most of our communication through email, please be sure that your email address is accurate in our system. We do not send out hard copy newsletters.
- There will be numerous forms going out during the first week of school. It is critical that you please complete these important forms and return them as soon as possible. In addition, please complete all online forms.
- Please check our website: https://nickle.cbe.ab.ca/ frequently for important and updated information such as bell times, school calendar, parent meetings, student handbook, attendance procedures etc.
The start of the school year has been busy as we plan to welcome our students back and the various activities that we would like to do throughout September and the school year in general.
Our first day of school is Thursday August 29. Nickle students will enter through the main doors, grade 6’s will go to the main gym, grade 7’s will go to the Aux gym and Grade 8 and 9 students will go to their homeroom classrooms on the second floor. Each student should expect an email from their homeroom teacher prior to the first day of school.
During the first day of the school year, I will visit all the homerooms to deliver the same message about my vision for the school year. I want the Nickle School community to be a safe, kind, and caring school community where all students can have a positive school experience. It is something that I can say, our school staff can say, but it is our students that help create that community. I challenge all students to help create this safe, kind, and caring community.
At Nickle School, we have minimal fees; our primary fees are for field trips, athletics, consumable supplies in Construction and Foods and for the rental of band equipment. If families have any question, regarding fees please reach out to their teachers or to the main office.
At Nickle School, our cell phone policy last year was basic; it is the expectation that students have their phones in their lockers during instructional time. At this time, we are waiting the official school district policy from the CBE as the Alberta Government passed new legislation in spring regarding cell phones in schools (students are no longer permitted to use them during instructional time, Limiting distractions in Alberta’s classrooms | Limiter les distractions dans les salles de classe de l’Alberta | alberta.ca). We will continue to follow last years policy until we have received additional information from the CBE. We will have enough technology for all our students and if parents need to get a hold of their students, they should call the main office. If a student is not compliant and their teacher has asked them to put it away and they refuse, they will be required to turn their cell phone into the office.
Our main office staff includes me, Mrs. Craig, our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Frayne and Mrs. Davis, our resource teachers (they will be splitting this role this year, in addition to classroom teaching duties), Shelly Kolb, our Secretary, and Michelle Coles, our Administrative Secretary. I have attached a few key documents for the upcoming school year.
