Physical Education supports you in acquiring skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities. You will gain experience within various physical activities assisting you in further understanding health and wellness benefits, promoting positive interactions and leading an active lifestyle.


Grade 6 Physical Education, Health and Wellness

Doing things that are not safe affect me and might hurt other people too! Your child will understand that their choices, whether good or bad, can touch a lot of people. They will see how learning to make decisions with a whole group is an important life skill. They will also grow to appreciate the importance of physical activity while discovering essential life skills, such as cooperation, leadership, fair play, and teamwork.

Your child will learn to

  • participate in a variety of moderate-to-vigorous physical activities that support training principles
  • demonstrate how movement patterns are applied across various physical activities
  • reflect on how healthy relationships require consideration of different opinions, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and needs
  • consider possible outcomes that can inform decisions regarding consent in risk-taking activities
  • examine how access affects nutrition choices in a variety of contexts
  • analyze the risks and benefits of borrowing money in a variety of situations

Grade 7 Physical Education

What are the benefits of an active lifestyle? Your child will take part in various activities that will help them to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. They will grow to appreciate the importance of physical activity while discovering essential life skills, such as cooperation, leadership, fair play, and teamwork.

Your child will participate in dance, games, gymnastics, individual physical activities, and activities outside of school, such as aquatics and outdoor pursuits. Through active and safe participation, they will understand what an active lifestyle involves and how their physical and emotional health will benefit from physical activity. Your child will also discover how positive interactions, through fair play, leadership, and teamwork, make physical activity more fun and productive. Grade 7 Health and Life Skills

My friends like me for who I am. I have a lot to offer! Grade 7 students become aware that they need to show more responsibility in their grooming, organization, study habits, and relationships with others.

Your child will understand more about how their self-image is affected by the people they see on TV, in movies, and in magazines. They will compare their own choices about physical activity, healthy eating, and sleep with recommended health standards. Your child will know what makes good friendships, and they’ll begin to build a personal portfolio or collection of items that show their strengths and interests. Grade 8 Health and Life Skills

I have an idea of what I’d like to do in the future. It is just a few years away! More than ever, your teen will see who they are and what they believe. They will begin to understand what it means to keep good relationships and make choices that help them a long way into the future.

Grade 8 students will learn about accepting themselves as they are—as different from others! They will examine the relationship between choices and consequences and see how some choices can have very bad results—like smoking, or drinking and driving. Your teen will study what makes someone a good leader and example for others, and what a good group/team member looks like. Grade 9 Health and Life Skills

Who knew that my fun volunteering could help me get a job in the future! Students understand how their choices today have a long-term effect. Who they choose to look up to and which group they choose to be a part of play a role.

Your Grade 9 child will take charge in encouraging their friends, their community, and your family to live a healthy lifestyle. They’ll look at laws in place about health and safety and whether they think changes should be made. Addictions and unhealthy relationships are studied more deeply. Your teen will look at their career goals too, learning that working as a volunteer could lead to a great job in the future! Human Sexuality Education 

Schools are required to offer human sexuality education in Grade 3 through senior high school. The boldfaced and italicized learning outcomes in the Grade 3-9 physical education and wellness curriculum contain topics related to gender identity, sexual orientation or human sexuality.

School authorities must notify parents at least 30 calendar days in advance and provide parents with the option to opt-in their child for this instruction.

Exemptions from Physical Education

Exemption from physical education may be given

  • for medical conditions, when a certification from a medical practitioner is sent to the principal with a statement of activities the student can’t participate in
  • for religious beliefs, when a statement in writing from a parent is presented to the principal
  • when appropriate facilities can’t be accessed

When a student is exempted, they will participate in other activities consistent with the aim and outcomes of the program, where appropriate.
