In Science, students explore and investigate big questions related to the world around them. When students learn through the lens of science, they move beyond factual recall and develop the science-related attitudes, skills and knowledge needed to solve problems and make decisions. Students become lifelong learners through maintaining their sense of wonder about the world around them.

They explore, investigate and find out how things work in order to answer questions and satisfy their curiosities. Learning about science provides a framework for students to deepen their understanding and interpret the world around them. At each grade level, students explore topics related to: change; energy; matter; systems; interactions/relationships; forces; and diversity.

Grade 6 Science

  • I am writing code and exploring computers and technology! In Grade 6 Science, your child will expand their computational thinking skills. They will also learn about internal and external forces, climate change, and the biodiversity of ecosystems.
  • What Your Child is Learning
    • relate the heating and cooling of particles to the behaviour of matter, including expansion and contraction
    • analyze internal and external forces and their effects on objects
    • examine scientific, environmental, and economic considerations related to energy management
    • investigate factors affecting climate and climate change, including personal actions
    • investigate the characteristics, components, and biodiversity of ecosystems
    • investigate celestial bodies and technologies for exploring the solar system
    • examine abstractions, coding structures, and the impact of computers and technology
    • describe the roles of hypotheses and explanations in science
  • For more information about Grade 6 Science, refer to the new curriculum.

Grade 7 Science

  • How are heat and temperature different? Your child will begin the study of energy, matter, and forces and analyze and communicate understandings of Earth and its ecosystems. Grade 7 Science focuses on the science- and technology-related knowledge and skills your child needs in order to solve problems and make decisions about social and environmental issues.
  • What Your Child is Learning
    • Grade 7 Science students are introduced to geology—the kinds of materials and changes that occur on Earth’s crust and in the interior of Earth. They apply physical science concepts like heat, temperature, and forces to analyze, design, and build safe and stable structures and devices that reduce heat loss. Students investigate how organisms interact within ecosystems and how these systems are affected by human activities. They also consider decisions and actions for sustainability of the environment and agricultural industries. For more information about Grade 7 Science, refer to the program of studies.

Grade 8 Science

  • How do hydraulics work and why do we have an epiglottis? Students apply this Grade 8 Science vocabulary as they investigate machines and the human body. They experiment with liquids and gases to interpret their uses in everyday situations, they learn how light travels through different materials, and they learn how vision works.
  • What Your Child is Learning
    • From machines that use energy, to the transport of solutions, to the functioning of the eye, your teen will see first-hand how science affects their daily life, their career, and their future. They will investigate the structure of living things, from the smallest cells to the more complex systems in the human body. Your teen will also examine the interactions among water, land, and climate to better understand the distribution and health of living things, and they’ll learn to appreciate how the knowledge and skills they are applying in class have led to advances in medical and mechanical technologies. For more information about Grade 8 Science, refer to the program of studies.

Grade 9 Science

  • Can you make sense of the periodic table? Students in Grade 9 Science work safely with chemicals to explain, interpret, and extend their understanding of chemical theory. They also design, test, and evaluate electrical devices that transfer and transform energy, and they explore the role of genes and DNA in the diversity of life. Students study space exploration and how science and technology are related.
  • What Your Child is Learning
    • Your teen will begin to unravel the significance of DNA in genetics—including its role in determining traits like hair colour—and they’ll identify the scientific and technological advancements that led to human exploration of the moon and beyond! They will be energized as they problem-solve and experiment with electricity and evaluate the benefits and impacts of energy use. Your teen will continue to develop as a scientist as they conduct and analyze chemical reactions and apply their understanding of chemistry to the world around them.
