Dear Nickle Families,

We hope that you had a great Spring Break and that you are looking forward to classes resuming today.  During classes today teachers will review information around school operations as enter the last three months of the school year.  Teachers will review the Government of Alberta’s Personal Mobile Device Legislation pertaining to schools, morning entry time, use of lockers, and outdoor lunch.

Personal Mobile Device Legislation

On June 17, 2024, the Government of Alberta announced new rules to limit the use of personal mobile devices (any personal device that connects to the internet) in classrooms during instructional time, and social media on school networks and devices. These changes were announced to reduce distractions, maximize learning time, and to support student mental health.

The Calgary Board of Education adopted guidelines and has written and Administrative Regulation (AR) outlining the policies adopted by the district.  You can read the AR 6008 here.

At Nickle School, the following guidelines were outlined last fall guided by legislation:

  • Personal mobile devices are not permitted to be used inside the school.
  • Mobile devices must be powered off / turned to silent mode and remain in student lockers
  • Students are permitted to use their personal devices at lunch time, but this must be outside of the school building (i.e. not in the lunchroom, or in the hallways)
  • We will continue to follow the Progressive Discipline Policy for students not meeting the guidelines outlined.

School Entry Time

  • The school opens/doors are unlocked for students at 7:50 a.m.
  • Students must remain in the front foyer where there is supervision by assigned teachers or administration.
  • If students arrive earlier, they will need to wait outside until the doors open.

Personal Items and Student Lockers

  • Backpacks, handbags, and coats etc. must be stored in assigned student lockers.
  • Students should only carry the necessary materials for each class to ensure hallways and classrooms are clear and organized.

Grade 7 to 9 Outdoor Lunch

  • W will return to outdoor lunch with the change in the weather.
  • Students will be expected to go outside during lunchtime (weather permitting).
  • Please ensure your child is prepared for outdoor conditions.
  • Grade 6 student supervision at lunch and recess remains unchanged

Thank you for your continued support in helping us maintain a safe and productive environment for all students.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
