Grades 7-9 | Semester 2 CTF/Fine Arts & PE Enhancement Update

We have begun the engagement of student and teacher input for Semester 2 options.  Next Semester,  students will select their choices for each of the four blocks they have options next semester. Depending on spaces available, students may have the opportunity to repeat courses

Courses offered for student choice will depend on which teacher is teaching in the block of the schedule where they have options. Ms. Craig and Ms. Clark will gather an advisory group of students for input; and will meet with teachers at the end of the week.  Teachers and admin will identify courses to be offered  that will be influenced by student input from both this week and from last spring's input from our students, classroom and equipment availability, and teacher experience. The information learned this week, and the process staff agree to will be shared with students and families next week. Please stay tuned for more information.

WildCat Athletics

Basketball Season | The Final Countdown

There is a modified game schedule to close out the shortened season.  Mr. Rae has shared the updated schedule with basketball families. Nickle is hosting some of the games on the 17th, 19th and 24th of November, so please come out and support the Wild Cats!  See the Nickle Calendar for more information.

Nickle Gear Orders Have Arrived

If you placed an order in September for Nickle Gear, it arrived late last week and will be distributed to students through the PE team.

Off-Site Trips

Last spring four Nickle teachers were successful in applying to the Chevron Open Minds program. We are thankful that the Open Minds programming accommodated our classes after losing nearly a month of programming in October because of the labour action. Educators from the program come out to visit classes and prepare them for the learning when they are offsite. This week Ms. Sergent's Grade 6 homeroom  will attend Chevron Open Minds Zoo School from Monday through Friday; and Ms. Auger's homeroom will attend for first week of December. Mrs. Wagemaker's Grade 7 homeroom will attend Chevron City Hall School this week on Thursday and Friday; and next week Monday through Wednesday.

OurSchool Student Survey

Nickle School will once again be participating in an online school perception survey for students called the OurSCHOOL Student Survey. Grades 6&9 students at Nickle will complete the survey before November 27. The anonymous survey is completely voluntary for all CBE students. The CBE’s Education Plan prioritizes student voice and well-being in our decision-making processes. Responses from this survey are used at the system and school level to recognize and improve what is necessary for students to feel safe, welcome, and cared for when at school.

Students in Grades 6 and 9 provide feedback on: sense of belonging, positive relationships, anxiety, feeling safe at school, life satisfaction, general health, orientation to well-being, goal-oriented, self-regulation. and cultural awareness of others. Additionally, students provide feedback on: depression, self-esteem, cultural awareness of self. Demographic questions are also asked on this survey for norming purposes including age, gender, and home language. If you have any questions, please contact dccraig@cbe.ab.ca.

Weather Changes & Relaxed Entry Reminder

As the weather turns colder, we remind families that doors open for the relaxed entry at 8:05 am. Classes begin at 8:15 am. (Calgary weather can change quickly! Please ensure your child(ren) are dressed appropriately for the conditions).

Lunchtime Reminders

Grade 6 Students will continue following the structured CBE lunch supervision program with eating indoors in their classrooms and going outside for recess over the second half of the lunch block (weather permitting).

We regularly monitor weather conditions and adjust plans accordingly for all students. Nickle School follows the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) guidelines for inclement weather. For example, if the temperatures is below -20°C with windchill, students remain indoors, with supervision, for both eating and recess.

Grades 7–9 Students:

There will be a continuation of the Nickle Lunch Routines from last year.  After the Fall Break, the lunch block will shift to an indoor eating portion where students are supervised on the main floor in designated areas. Students will go outside for the second half of the lunch block where there is on-campus supervision, or attend a club offered by Nickle staff.

Off-Campus Privileges continue: Students in Grades 7–9 may leave campus during lunch if they return on time and behave responsibly in the community.

Bathroom Access: Students will have access to school facilities during lunch. We encourage students to use the bathroom during the first half of the lunch block.

As a reminder, we ask that students or parents let their Homeroom teacher know if there is any reason they cannot go outside so they can be accommodated and supervised. More information on Clubs offered by Nickle Teachers will be coming.

Sincerely,

Marina Clark, Delaine Craig and Nickle Staff
